The Clean Fifteen is a list of fruits and vegetables that typically contain the lowest levels of pesticide residues, making them safer choices when you can’t afford or don’t have access to organic options. Updated annually by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), these items generally have thick peels, shells, or husks that protect the edible portion from pesticide exposure.

The Clean 15 (2025)

  1. Avocados – Their thick skin provides excellent protection from pesticide residues.
  2. Sweet Corn – The thick husks minimize pesticide exposure to the kernels.
  3. Pineapples – The tough exterior shields the edible flesh from pesticides.
  4. Onions – Their layered structure naturally deters pests, requiring fewer pesticides.
  5. Papaya – The thick skin protects the interior fruit from pesticide contamination.
  6. Sweet Peas (Frozen) – Processing methods help reduce pesticide residue.
  7. Asparagus – Naturally pest-resistant, requiring minimal pesticide application.
  8. Honeydew Melon – The thick rind provides good protection from pesticides.
  9. Kiwi – Despite its fuzzy exterior, kiwi typically has low pesticide residues.
  10. Cabbage – The outer leaves that are typically discarded before consumption help protect the inner leaves.
  11. Mushrooms – Commercial growing practices typically involve fewer pesticides.
  12. Cantaloupe – The thick rind shields the edible portions from pesticide exposure.
  13. Mangoes – Their thick skin acts as a barrier to pesticides reaching the flesh.
  14. Watermelon – The thick rind protects the interior fruit from pesticide residues.
  15. Broccoli – typically have low pesticide residues.
